Old car, old mountain bike, very very old mining town. Perfect mix for me.

Is suspension worth the extra weight, when not jumping anything?

Many misconceptions about this race, the main being that it is somehow not bumpy or jumpy. The majority of the course traverses non-technical terrain but the 10-20% of the course that is technical is very very much so. Much air can be had and many minutes can be gained or lost if you have to pick your way down (or up) a hill due to lack of suspension. I'm a crappy climber but I made some great time blowing by guys on 29er hardtails who were picking precious lines down the hills. I ran a lockout switch up front for the chill stuff and that kept the bike efficient. The rear shock was tuned to come alive only on the real bumps not under pedaling forces. I even ran a dropper post because that extra 2" of clearance on a downhill made me much more confident. Worked well.

912E. I'm a small spender. :) Both the out dated MTB and the cylinder-deprived car work better than most would expect though.

Full suspension is not necessarily for jumping, moreso for technical/rocky terrain in general. I ride a hardtail, but there are times where I am on really rocky trails (particularly in downhill sections) where I wish I had full suspension. It makes it easier to just hammer over all the bumps.

It's air cooled and rear engine. I'd love one!

I have a 2006 575. Love it. Mines not the lovely Yeti turquoise though.
